As the young woman was walking, carrying Kaner in her arms, he started to feel a warm current running through his body.
‘Eh? Is this my healing power? I didn’t expect it to be passive. It feels pretty comfortable at least.’
The young woman didn’t seem to be the cause of the warmth. Kaner was even a little surprised. She was looking straight ahead, simply taking her child wherever they were going.
‘Uh… Shouldn’t a new mother be more interested in her child? Is it because I’m black?’
After a while, the young woman reached a large door. A door about twice her height from what Kaner could see with his limited view.
She pushed on the door, and it opened with ease. Kaner would have expected the young woman to have difficulty opening a door like this. It looked pretty heavy.
‘The engineering must be pretty decent.’
As the young woman entered the room, she closed the door behind her. She then let out a sigh and proceeded to place Kaner on the only bed in the room.
Now that Kaner was free from her arms he could finally move around on his own. It was just, his body was very weak right now. He could barely even move his head, so he spent a lot of effort trying to survey the area.
The two were the only ones in the room and it was a large one. The windows stretched from about knee height, all the way to the ceiling but they were rounded at the top.
‘Oh? This is pretty fancy. Look at this floor, and the walls are unique too.’
Kaner hadn’t seen any rooms like this before. The closest thing he could imagine was a cathedral.
‘Looks like this young woman is living well.’
After thinking this, Kaner turned to look at the young woman.
What he saw interested him. The young woman was seated on the bed, staring out of one of the windows. She didn’t seem to be too concerned with her new child.
‘Uh… you have to take care of me at least a little, you know?’
Kaner was starting to doubt his safety around this negligent young woman. Would he be able to survive his infant years? It would be really tragic if he were to starve to death or something like that.
‘Seriously… What kind of start is this?’
As he was thinking this, Kaner struggled hard to move over his baby body.
When he succeeded, he noticed that he was now naked. Of course this was the case. Most babies weren’t born with clothes on. All he had previously, was a blanket wrapped around him, which caused him no small amount of struggle to escape from.
‘Notice me sempai.’
Kaner started to slowly crawl his way over to the young woman. Now that he was seeing her, she really was young. She was dressed in a green robe, that had white floral patterns sewn into it. It looked pretty nice in Kaner’s eyes.
Next, he noticed her long black hair, which went all the way down her back and onto the bed.
From his angle, he couldn’t really see her face, but what he could see was devoid of any signs of ageing. Her skin was smooth and without wrinkles.
‘Hm. If I didn’t know any better, I would say she’s even younger than me.’
Kaner made this guess while still slowly crawling with all the strength he could muster. He noticed that even though it was very difficult, he wasn’t feeling any pain or fatigue. It was as if he could continue to struggle like this forever.
‘Hm. This healing power’s pretty legit. Does it have a bonus effect of restoring energy? If so where does the energy it uses come from?’
As he felt that warm sensation continuing to flow around his body, Kaner wondered how it worked as he slowly progressed. He realised that he wouldn’t really be able to find out the answer in any short amount of time, so he put it at the back of his mind.
After what felt like half a day, Kaner finally reached the young woman. He slowly reached out his tiny baby hand and pushed at her leg.
The young woman seemed to be surprised. She turned to look at him, then without too much thought, she stood up and headed to what looked like a cabinet. From it, she pulled out a cloth and some safety pins.
‘Eh? Is she about to craft something? I… I kind of wanted you to pay me some attention… I’m fully dependant on you, you know?’
The young woman then returned to Kaner’s side and placed the items on the bed next to him. She spread the cloth such that it lay evenly on the bed. She then picked Kaner up and placed him on top of it, his back to the bed.
‘Ugh. What are you doing? I can’t see anything now.’
Kaner was now unable to see the young woman. With his baby head, he could only see the ceiling.
He could feel the young woman wrapping the cloth around his lower body, and between his legs.
‘Ah… I see. Mother did tell me about this. Babies can’t control themselves, so for convenience, the parents would put them in disposable underwear meant for containing any messy situations.’
With her task complete the young woman returned to what she was doing before.
‘Ah… So you’re still going to ignore me?’
Kaner was feeling a little helpless. This woman didn’t really take good care of her children, did she?
‘I wonder how that Tianlan fellow grew up.’
While Kaner thought of this, he decided to check up on the abilities he was supposed to have received from Crystalia.
He realised that most of the things he asked for weren’t really things he could confirm the presence of right now. First of all, he didn’t even know how to activate them, the abilities he had confirmed so far, language understanding and his healing power, were both passive.
‘Ah… So I can only wait until they happen? What about the storage space?’
Kaner tried to imagine a space, a grand space where he could store all manner of things. Crystalia said it would be adapted to his strength, but surely it was at least the size of this room, right?
‘Ugh. Well, it’s there… Barely!’
Kaner was happy to discover the storage space, it was somehow connected to his mind. The only thing was… It was about the size of a grain of sand. In fact, he doubted if he could actually store a grain of sand in it, it was so small.
‘This… There’s no need to worry. It’s not like Crystalia has shown herself to be untrustworthy or something right?’
As he thought this, he remembered what Crystalia had said.
‘Didn’t she fail to become an angel three times? This… And I ended up here… She said it was someone else’s interference, but what if…’
Thinking up to this point, Kaner suddenly had the feeling that things wouldn’t be as easy as he had thought they would be.
‘Sigh. You can only make do with what you have.’
Kaner resigned himself to the possibility of not having abilities the exact way he had imagined.
‘Oh well, just the healing ability and understanding languages will probably save me a lot of trouble.’
Oh, poor misguided Kaner. What he didn’t know, that I’m taking the liberty to tell you, *Minor spoiler alert* is that his healing ability and understanding of languages would both cause him immense pain… Sucks to be him am I right?
Kaner decided to spend his time, getting used to this new baby body of his.
He started to move about as much as he could, and he noticed that the warm current really did seem to replenish his energy. Even after ten minutes of using all his might to move around, he still wasn’t tired.
‘Wow! This is actually pretty good.’
As a new born baby, it was hard enough for him to hold his head up. But he continued to perservere. He was pretty confident that if he started walking, the young woman would have no choice but to pay him attention.
Unfortunately for Kaner, he severely underestimated the difficulty of this task. Even with the seemingly limitless energy he had, his legs were still too weak to support his weight. he could only crawl around on the bed.
‘Ugh. One step at a time. There’s no need to rush.’
While Kaner was moving around, time had slowly passed. Kaner was born during day time, and it was still bright outside. He had no idea what time it was, because there was no clock in the room.
After a while, the young woman turned to look at him. He stared back at her, while still continuing to crawl around. Neither knew what the other was thinking.
Shortly afterwards, the young woman grabbed Kaner and held him close to her.
‘Eh? What are you doing? There’s no need to get violent, we were minding our own business.’
The young woman then removed part of her roab, over her shoulder.
‘W-Wait. Is this… The legendary, Passing Of Essence – Inheritance Of The Younger Generation? It… It can’t be. Mother told me that most babies undergo this ceremony several times a day during their upbringing. But… But I’m a grown man! H-How, how am I supposed to face my mother after this?’
Kaner had no choice but to close his eyes and let things happen. He knew he needed the various beneficial properties of this process. Besides, how was he supposed to get nourishment otherwise?
After the whole thing ended, Kaner stared blankly at the young woman, who also stared blankly at him. It was an awkward moment for the both of them.
The young woman then turned back around and headed to a table in a corner of the room.
There she picked up a piece of bread, and headed back to sit on the bed. She resumed her gazing and every now and then, she would tear a piece off and place it in her mouth.
Kaner noticed that she would hold the bread in her mouth for a long time, before slowly chewing and swallowing it.
Kaner noticed a slight change to her aura at this time, but it wasn’t enough to warrent further thought. He continued to crawl around on the bed.
A while later he heard a knock on the door. Followed by a woman’s voice.
“Fourth Sister, may I come in?”
The young woman then turned her head to the door. After a moment, she turned back to the window, and said:
“If you like.”
“Then I’ll impose on Fourth Sister.”
After saying this, the person at the door entered the room, closing the door behind her.
She was also a young woman, but she looked older than the other young woman. She was dressed in a similar robe but it was purple in colour.
“How have you been, Fourth Sister?”
The young woman didn’t turn to look at her guest, but replied:
“The same as always.”
‘Eh? The same as always? Where have I heard that before?’
Kaner felt that uncomfortably familiar feeling again. He couldn’t quite place it, but he felt like he had something in common with this young woman.
“I see. So, this is your new son, Wu Hei?”
She said this while turning to look at Kaner, who looked back at her. He noticed a slight disgust in her tone.
‘Wu Hei? Is that supposed to be my name?’
Kaner remembered the young woman calling him ‘Little Hei’ back in what he assumed was the operation room of this place.
With his understanding of the language, Kaner was able to tell that this ‘Hei’, basically translated to ‘Black’, there were also other things it meant, all of which were negative.
‘This… Was this on purpose? What kind of people are these? You named me based on my Innate Shadow Physique? Is that normal? So I guess your name is purple because of your robe?’
Kaner was a little annoyed by the way he was named.
‘Couldn’t they have put some more thought into it?’
After thinking this, Kaner crawled over to this guest, who was on the opposite side of the bed to to the the young woman.
As he approached, he noticed that she took a step back.
‘Hey now… That’s uncalled for.’
Kaner was a little surprised at her behaviour.
“What exactly do you want, Second Sister?”
‘Second Sister? and she called you Fourth Sister… That makes this my aunt? Great family we have here.’
“I just came to say hello.”
“Well, you’ve said it. Now be on your way.”
“This… I see you’re still recovering from childbirth… I’ll leave you be, Fourth Sister.”
She took one last look at them before leaving the room.
The young woman sighed before looking toward Kaner, or shall we say Hei now?
She then picked him up and held him close to her.
‘Eh? Another inheritance ceremony? We just had one!’
Hei was afraid of what was to come so he quickly closed his eyes.
To his surprise he heard the young woman’s soft voice.
“That was Second Sister Tang Jiao. She’s tricky with her words so you should stay away from her.”
‘Eh? Why are you talking to me? I’m a baby you know?’
Hei was surprised and opened his eyes, he saw that the young woman wasn’t looking at him, but was looking out the window as usual.
“I saw the way Second Sister behaved before.”
‘So you drove Tang Jiao away because of how she acted towards me?’
Hei was surprised. His inital opinion of this young woman, his new mother, was overwritten. She then hugged him with more pressure. He could feel her warmth.
‘This… Soothing Of The Progeny – Symbiosis Establishment.’
His mother had taught him about, how many mothers would grow extremely attatched to their young babies. He didn’t expect this young woman to also be the same.
She then turned to look Hei in the eyes.
“I may not be the best mother, but I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
She said this, then she gently kissed his forehead.
‘Everlasting Prommise – A Mother’s Love. This… Maybe this new mother isn’t so bad.’
